Awards & Prizes 2024

The BSP annual awards and prizes 2024, for research into periodontology and implant dentistry, have been awarded to the following winners:

The Clinical Fellowship Award is designed to enhance clinical training by providing support for successful applicants to participate in or attend events that have a clear educational benefit, with explicitly stated educational outcomes. With a maximum award of up to £4,000, the 2024 prizes has been awarded to:

  • Pasquale Santamaria

 

  • Kiran Amin

The BSP Research Grant is designed to support postgraduate research development and training with a value up to £5,000. The primary purpose is to enable the successful applicants to undertake research projects with a clear application in periodontology. The 2024 prize has been awarded to:

  • Sara Sharaf

 

  • Giuseppe Mainas

The Frank Ashley Undergraduate Prize is designed to encourage dental and hygiene therapy undergraduates at UK Dental Schools to undertake a project that has a clear educational benefit in periodontology. The 2024 prize of £500 has been awarded to:

  • Laura Irving

The Sir Wilfred Fish Research Prize, instituted in 1970, is awarded annually by the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, with the object of encouraging researchers in the early stages of their career. The Prize takes the form of a cash award of £1,000. 

The 2024 judges have shortlisted the applications to the following four entries:

  • Annabel Simpson - "Fighting Fit-The Impact of Aerobic Exercise Training on the Oral Environment and Microbiota."
  • Crystal Marruganti - "Periodontitis increases the susceptibility to severe plaque psoriasis. A University-based cross-sectional study and microRNA expression analysis."
  • Samina Iram - "Current practice in management of Periodontal disease and uptake of BSP implementation of 2017 WWC and 2020 S3 Guideline stage I-III Periodontitis in UK Primary care."
  • Tasnim Choudhury - "Effects of adjunctive Er, Cr :YSGG laser in non-surgical periodontal treatment of intrabony periodontal defects: a 12-month, triple- masked, split-mouth randomised controlled trial."

Following presentations at the BSP Conference in Newcastle, The Sir Wilfred Fish Research Prize 2024 was awarded to Dr Crystal Marruganti.

The Systematic Review Prize, instituted in 2018, is awarded annually by the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, with the object of encouraging researchers in the early stages of their career. The Prize takes the form of a cash award of £1000.

The following entries will be judged at the BSP Conference in Newcastle:

  • Deema Dababseh - "Adjunctive Use of Hyaluronic Acid in Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis."
  • Sandra Olivia Kuswandani - "Periodontal and Peri-implant Tissue Augmentation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis."
  • Faisal Alotaibi - "Premature Bone Resorption in Vertical Ridge Augmentation: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis."
  • Tina Lipovec - "Autologous Platelet Concentrates as Adjuncts to Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis."
  • Mishika Arora - "The effectiveness of platelet rich fibrin in alveolar ridge augmentation: a systematic review."

Following presentations at the BSP Conference in Newcastle, The Systematic Review Prize 2024 was awarded to Dr Faisal Alotaibi.

The BSP hold an annual Poster Prize competition with two categories: Research and Clinical Case Report.

The Prizes each take the form of a cash award of £500.

The poster must demonstrate either:

  • Original scientific research which has an application to periodontology or related aspects of implant dentistry. A systematic review or audit project cannot be submitted; or
  • Details of a clinical case which may have multi-disciplinary content but with the main theme being the periodontal and/or peri-implant  management.

Work must be unpublished (with the exception of Conference abstracts).

The Poster Prize entries will be judged at the BSP Conference in Newcastle 9-11 October 2024.

Research Poster

This year we have six entries for this category:

  • Joshua Jackson - "Qualitative preliminary findings from a Study Within A Trial (SWAT) to determine the suitability of Dental Care Professionals to Act as Principal Investigations."
  • Joao Paulo Steffens - "Exercise improves periodontal repair following ligature-induced periodontitis in rats through irisin-associated growth factor modulation."
  • Ahmad Azhar B Misran - "Are we providing comprehendible text material to our periodontal patients? A preliminary study."
  • Kitty Guo - "Genomic analysis of the periodontal pathogen Fusobacterium nucleatum: Variation in virulence and implications for colorectal cancer risk."
  • Dr Sucharita Banerjee - "Circulating and GCF levels of sIL1RAP are reduced in Periodontitis subjects with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus."
  • Akram Alshirah - "The Efficacy of Autologous Concentrated Growth Factor in Regenerative Dentistry -  A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis."

The Research Poster Prize 2024 was awarded to Dr Kitty Guo.

Clincial Case Report Poster

This year we have three entries for this category:

  • Sarah Ghazi - "Implantoplasty in the treatment of Peri-implantitis – case report."
  • Anju Rana - "Peri-prosthetic overgrowth management around implants in a leiomyosarcoma-treated case."
  • Sandeep Pai - "Socket Preservation for the non-implant based restorative solution- Think about the Pink."

The Clinical Case Report Poster Prize 2024 was awarded to Dr Sandeep Pai.
