Gums rock! Keep them safe!
Gum Health Day is an annual event celebrated on 12th May, organised by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP). Created ten years ago to increase public awareness of the negative impact of gum disease and the serious health problems associated with it, Gum Health Day aims to highlight to the general public that gum health is a key factor for overall health throughout life. It also serves to remind the public that gum disease is a relevant public-health concern because it is associated with major systemic and/or chronic health issues including diabetes, myocardial infarction, heart failure, stroke, chronic kidney disease, adverse pregnancy outcomes, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and more.
The Gum Health Day slogan this year, "Gums rock! Keep them safe!" is intended to have an educational approach, emphasising the crucial link between knowledge and prevention of periodontal diseases.
Dr. Mia Rakic, Gum Health Day 2024 co-ordinator, explains, "This year, our target audience is Generation Z! We felt that we needed to target Gum Health Day 2024 at young people, as they are not necessarily aware of the role played by their gum health in their overall health, so they may feel less concerned about them. We want to help young people to recognise the pivotal role their gums play in self-esteem and overall wellbeing. Our campaign aims to inspire young people to lead a positive change in how society views gum health, emphasising its importance beyond oral hygiene, and shed light on the work of the dental team.”
Gum Health Day resources to download and share
We will be working hard to raise awareness of Gum Health Day on the lead up to 12th May and will be encouraging our members and dental practices to promote this important campaign in their waiting rooms to their patients. You are welcome to download and print the posters below. Alternatively, you can view a range of images using the Custom Content Generator, which allows you to create your own customised layouts for social media around the slogan “Gums rock! Keep them safe!”
In addition, the EFP have created guidance for how oral health professionals, school teachers and parents can get involved and help to promote this year's campaign. Take a look at the fact sheets below:
EFP Gum Health Day 2024 Animation
The EFP have created a short animation aimed at young people to convey how important it is to brush your teeth and maintain good oral hygiene. By looking after your teeth and gums, you can help prevent other health issues.
