Working hard towards a more sustainable future
As Honorary Editor, I thought that you might be interested to know about some meetings the BSP Council recently held to discuss our commitment towards maximising the sustainability of the Society.
A lot of people think of the environment when they turn their thoughts to sustainability, and that is a big part of it. However, the concept of sustainability can be broadly broken down into themes related to supporting and putting back into people and the community, caring for the planet/ environment, and being economically responsible.
We worked together to come up with a dream list of things that we would like to achieve. Next, we plan to set ourselves some achievable short, medium and long-term goals. We will, of course, keep you up to date with our progress.
The process helped us recognise and reflect on the fact that the Society and its members already do a lot of good things. So, if you’re out there engaging with the community or making changes to be more environmentally sustainable then we’d love to hear your story!
We wanted you to know that we have been listening to feedback from members about making our conferences more environmentally sustainable and we have a lot of ideas for the future. Some small changes that you may notice this year include recycling delegates’ lanyards/ name tags and replacing the usual conference bags with ethically sourced tote bags, which we hope are more likely to be re-used after the event. We know that they’re baby steps, but they’re in the right direction and we plan to keep going….
