Dental Defence Union: Periodontal disease e-learning resource

The DDU has relaunched its periodontal disease e-learning resource, in collaboration with the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry (BSP), giving members the opportunity to learn and develop their knowledge of this key aspect of dentistry and to earn CPD.

In the latest edition of its journal, the DDU outlines how the module, originally produced in 2017, covers both the clinical and dento-legal aspects of managing periodontal disease and is composed of six sections, with a short assessment at the end to test your learning and knowledge resulting in three hours of verifiable CPD.

This follows separate research from the DDU which found that the average settlement value of a periodontal disease claim is higher than that of any other type of settled dental claim with £2.2 million paid out in settled claims involving periodontal disease in 2023.

Leo Briggs, deputy head of the DDU commented:

“I am delighted that the DDU and BSP periodontal e-learning programme is available for people to access, following an extensive update. This CPD course has been very popular since it was first launched in 2017, so it is great that the continuing collaboration between the BSP and the DDU has enabled us to re-launch the programme.

“I would like to thank everyone at the BSP who has worked on this project. People have been generous with both their time and expertise.”

Professor Philip Preshaw, President of the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry 2024 said:

“This e-learning programme is a great resource for dental professionals - it is comprehensive, easy to navigate, and covers all the relevant aspects of screening, assessment, diagnosis and treatment, with a strong emphasis on good record keeping and patient information. It has been extensively updated and the new design looks absolutely great.

“This CPD course is an excellent example of what can be achieved by collaborating between organisations, and its success is testament to the hard work and commitment of colleagues at both the BSP and DDU.  Many congratulations to all at DDU on the successful launch of this updated online resource.”
