A note from our President…
As we head towards spring, I am amazed at how much the BSP Team has already achieved in such a short space of time. The BSP Management Team has been busier than ever replying to clinical enquiries. The Education Advisory Committee has been working on the educational webinar programme for the next twelve months. The new ECG Committee has held their first meeting and are already making plans for future events. Council members have been hard at work, ticking jobs off their to-do lists in readiness for our first Council meeting next month. To support us all, Paula and Jo continue to manage all of these aspects of BSP business and keep the Society running smoothly.
Our February newsletter is testament to the many events planned by the Society and I wish to highlight some key dates for your diaries.
The BSP & SRRDG Study Day on Saturday 22 March 2025 is a wonderful opportunity to get involved in interactive case discussions led by Restorative and Periodontal Specialists. If you’re in the final stages of specialist training, a specialist/dentist with a special interest or an early career trainee (DFTs, DCTs) then make sure you take advantage of this course and snap up one of the last few remaining places!
On 14-17 May 2025, we will be heading to Vienna for EuroPerio11. More than 150 top speakers from all over the world will present at this leading congress in periodontology and implant dentistry. As well as enjoying the rich and varied scientific programme, live surgeries and interactive sessions, I hope you will also attend the BSP social event on Thursday evening, which promises to be a great night.
Another date for your diary is 12 May 2025, when we will be joining with other National Societies to celebrate Gum Health Day. Created eleven years ago, Gum Health Day aims to highlight to the general public that gum health is a key factor for overall health throughout life. It also seeks to remind the public that gum disease is a relevant public-health concern because it is associated with major systemic and/or chronic health issues including diabetes, myocardial infarction, heart failure, stroke, chronic kidney disease, adverse pregnancy outcomes, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and more. We will share more information next month about how you can support this important campaign.
Finally, I am delighted to announce that tickets have been launched for this year’s Conference, at the prestigious Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC), 27-29 November 2025.
On Thursday 27 November, we will hold a joint meeting with the British Society for Oral and Dental Research exploring British perio research and how that is translating into practice, together with an afternoon of fantastic BSP lectures on a range of topics from top tips to treating perio in practice, to discussing the perio ortho interface. There is also an amazing opportunity to book hands-on workshops to develop your skills and learn about the latest techniques, together with a dynamic and interactive afternoon symposium. Places are limited for Thursday, so be sure to add these additional events to your Conference booking!
On Friday 28 and Saturday 29 November, BSP is teaming up with the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy for to present The Oral Health Summit – PerioSmilesAhead. The Conference promises a captivating scientific programme which will unite oral healthcare professionals. Delegates will embark on a journey through perio with three dynamic streams including perio-systemic associations, clinical guidelines, risk profiling, non-surgical perio, regenerative and reconstructive surgery and supportive perio care.
The highlight of this event will undoubtedly be the remarkable assembly of world-renowned speakers. We are honoured to feature experts such as keynote speaker Otto Zuhr, Giulio Rasperini discussing his “nightmare cases,” and István Urban presenting cutting-edge techniques in vertical and horizontal ridge augmentation. Additionally, the programme will include the highly anticipated “A Pint of Science” session, a stimulating debate on the microbiome between Profs Curtis, Marsh and Chapple.
I very much hope that you can join me for this three-day event and I look forward to welcoming you to Edinburgh.
