Dr Luigi Nibali of the Eastman Dental Institute, UCL has been awarded the Sir Wilfred Fish Research Prize at the Autumn Scientific Meeting of BSP in London for his project 'NADPH oxidase polymorphism as a risk factor for presence and severity of Periodontitis'. A Certificate of Merit was awarded to V Tsakanika of Barts & The London, Queen Marys School of Medicine & Dentistry.

Dr Ulpee Darbar, Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Institute, London, has joined BSP Council. She will be a Council member until 2008.

Dr Geoffrey Sharpe, a Periodontics monospecialty trainee from the School of Dental Sciences, University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, has been awarded both the George Cross Fellowship (to support a visit to the postgraduate programme in Goteberg) and the Society's Research Grant for this year. He will be invited to receive his awards at a future Society meeting

Dr Payal J Patel from King's College London Dental Institute has been awarded the Frank Ashley Undergraduate prize for the project "The effect of a commercially available mouthwash on human osteoblast cells". She will be invited to receive her award at a future Society meeting.

The Asian Pacific Society of Periodontology is proud to announce its 6th meeting to be held from 4-6 November 2005 in Chennai, India. This will coincide with the 30th Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Periodontology.

The BSP represents most specialists and general dental practitioners with an interest in periodontology. Many of our members have either undergone specialist training or have been "grandfathered" onto specialist lists in one or more dental specialties. They work in all realms of primary and secondary dental care in conjunction with other dentists and PCDs. We have discussed the consultation documents and enclose replies on behalf of the BSP to your questions. The BSP strongly supports the maintenance of Specialist Lists. This initiative acts to ensure protection of the public and provides a structured programme for clinical professional development to specialist level. We therefore feel that it would be a retrograde step to eliminate or absorb monospecialty lists into Restorative Dentistry.
