1. What is your position in the BSP and what does this role involve?I am the Education and Events Manager for BSP. My role is split into two main categories: planning and organising the Annual Conference with the President for that year, and organising the educational webinar programme. I have other ad hoc tasks to perform, such as organising the 70th Anniversary of BSP, attending non-BSP meetings e.g. the BSDHT Oral Health Conference and The British Dental Conference & Dentistry Show, and admin tasks such as monthly banking.

On 20 May 2020, the Chief Dental Officer of Scotland issued a letter that described a phased approach to the remobilisation of dental services after closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Phase 2 of this approach is concerned with the restarting of dental practices. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the interruption of dental services across the world. Attention is now focused on planning the re-opening and restructuring of dental services. To support decision making a working group, led by Professors Jan Clarkson and Craig Ramsay, conducted a rapid review of internationally produced guidance for re-opening dental services.

Whilst the dental profession in the UK is currently facing an uncertain time, and as we await guidance from the Chief Dental Officers on how we will treat patients, it appears that some of our European colleagues have started returning to work following guidelines from their (country’s) relevant authorities.

The Letter of Preparedness from Chief Dental Officer, England, Sara Hurley, and NHS England and NHS Improvement, Director of Primary Care and System Transformation, Matt Neligan, published on 25th of March outlined the postponement of elective dental care and further assurance of NHS dental contracts.
