PERIO MADE EASY Implementing Healthy Gums DO Matter

AIM
This one-day course will provide the delegate with an evidence-based understanding of periodontal management, aetiology, classification, diagnosis and treatment using the Healthy Gums Do Matter toolkit (HGDM) and the S3 guidelines. This knowledge will support delegates in managing periodontitis and implementing a structured and successful workflow into the current NHS contract with the avoidance of doubt pathway.

OBJECTIVES
• Outline the importance of screening, diagnosing, and treating periodontal disease and the legal and ethical duties of care.
• Outline the importance of effective communication and behaviour change approaches to patients and give an understanding of how to assess patient engagement using periodontal indices and its importance in managing gingivitis and periodontitis.
• Give an understanding of the 2018 classification of periodontal diseases and conditions and how to practically implement it into practice using the British Society of Periodontology’s implementation plan and the HGDM toolkit and understand where and why it differs from the world workshop classifi cation.
• Give an understanding of the BSP’s UK implementation of the S3 level evidence-based treatment guidelines for periodontitis and the HGDM approach for managing and treating periodontal diseases in primary care and how to claim for periodontal treatment under the current NHS regulations with the avoidance of doubt pathway.
OUTCOMES
• Delegates will have an understanding of the 2018 classifi cation for periodontal diseases, the S3 level treatment guidelines for periodontitis and Healthy Gums DO Matter approach for managing periodontal diseases in primary care.
• Delegates will have a greater understanding of how to manage periodontal diseases in primary care under the current NHS contract applying a phased care treatment approach using the avoidance of doubt pathway.

SHAZAD SALEEM BIOGRAPHY
Shazad Saleem graduated from St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2002. Having completed his vocational training and a year as an SHO in Maxillofacial Surgery, he returned to general dental practice where he completed his Diploma of Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) examination. He has also completed a Master’s in Research (MDPH (MRes)) at the University of Manchester as a part of an In-Practice Fellowship training award from the National Institute of Health Research.
He now operates four dental practices in the Northwest of England with three other partners, delivering NHS dental care in some of the most deprived areas in the Northwest. He has been involved in a number of projects including the original service redesign pilot in Oldham and Salford.
He is currently Chair of the Perio Subgroup for Greater Manchester LDN and has been leading the development of implementing an evidence-based care pathway approach for managing periodontal diseases into NHS dental practice called Healthy Gums DO Matter. He also delivers training on how to implement Health Gums DO Matter into practice with Health Education England and is currently joint chair of The Education Advisory Committee for the British Society of Periodontology (BSP) and is also a BSP Faculty member.
